DOJ Targets Google's Online Ad Business in Monopoly Suit 
- The accusations state Google is abusing its place in digital advertising using 'anticompetitive, exclusionary, and unlawful means to eliminate or severely diminish any threat to its dominance'. More here

WhatsApp To Appeal €5.5M GDPR Fine 
- Already in the process of challenging a separate €225M fine imposed by GDPR breaches from 2021, the Meta-owned messaging app has chosen to appeal the charges and fine from the European Data Protection Board last month. More here

BigTech Layoffs Are Hitting DEI Jobs Hard 
- Companies that made lofty promises to hire more underrepresented groups are letting go of DEI departments. Listings for DEI roles were down 19% last year - a bigger decline than legal or general HR jobs saw [with only software engineering (24%) and data science (27%) jobs seeing larger declines]. FTC Announces Size Updates for Transaction Thresholds for Premerger Notification Filings - The revised figures for reporting proposed mergers and acquisitions will adjust from $101M to just over $111M. The FTC will publish the adjusted amounts no later than 01.31. More here.

Supreme Court Asks for Biden Admin Opinion on TX and FL Social Media Laws - The highest court requested the administration take a look at a pair of controversial social media laws in the US states imposed in response to beliefs that social media platforms were censoring their users (particularly conservative viewpoints). Goodwin Proctor Follows Layoffs With Bonuses + New Partners - The AM Law Top 20 law firm reduced its employees by 5% at the start of the year. After hiring a number of health sciences partners and associates through a group lateral move from Troutman Pepper, the firm has announced some market matching bonuses for associates. More here
