  • Mary O’Carroll, the former head of Google’s legal operations, has joined Goodwin as Chief Operating Officer, bringing her extensive experience in legal operations and technology to the firm.

  • O’Carroll aims to leverage her expertise in innovation and efficiency to enhance Goodwin’s operational processes and client services.

  • Her move to Goodwin highlights the increasing importance of technology and streamlined operations in law firm management.

Mary O’Carroll, a renowned figure in the legal operations sector, has been appointed as the Chief Operating Officer at Goodwin, a prominent Boston-based law firm that specializes in technology, private equity, and life sciences, according to an announcement by the law firm.

O’Carroll's transition to Goodwin signifies a strategic move to integrate her vast experience in legal operations and technology within the firm’s management structure. Her appointment underscores the growing emphasis on efficiency and innovation in legal practice management.

Expertise and Former Role at Google

O’Carroll, a former investment banker, first began her legal operations career at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. She joined Google in 2008 as its first legal operations professional. While at Google, she helped found Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (CLOC) and served as its president for a five-year period where its membership grew from 40 to 3,000 members.

O’Carroll spent 13 years at Google, up to 2021, building its legal operations functions. Her tenure at Google was marked by the implementation of cutting-edge technologies and processes aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of legal services. O’Carroll’s leadership in legal operations has been recognized industry-wide, highlighting her ability to drive innovation in traditional legal environments.

Plans for Goodwin

At Goodwin, O’Carroll will oversee more than 1,000 business professionals across the globe. The new COO plans to focus on optimizing the firm’s operational processes and client service delivery. She aims to leverage her expertise to implement technological advancements and streamline workflows, ultimately enhancing the firm’s competitive edge.

Investments in technology have spiked over the last two decades as legal departments have grown and the role of the general counsel has changed, O’Carroll was quoted as saying by Bloomberg Law. That’s put pressure on law firms to think about different ways to do fee arrangements and given rise to alternative service providers.

Goodwin “wants to be a leader in this space and to transform in a way that optimizes for generating, creating the best in class lawyers and delivering the best services to their clients,” O’Carroll  added.

O’Carroll’s move to Goodwin highlights a broader trend in the legal industry, where firms increasingly prioritize technology and operational efficiency. Her expertise in legal operations and technology will be instrumental in driving Goodwin’s strategic initiatives and maintaining its position as a leader in the legal industry.
