Former Twitter General Counsel Joins Match Group

Sean Edgett, former general counsel of Twitter before it was bought by Elon Musk for $44 billion in 2022, has been named the new legal chief and secretary of Match Group

  • Sean Edgett, former general counsel of Twitter, takes over as Match Group's new legal chief and secretary.

  • Edgett brings experience managing legal challenges during Twitter's acquisition by Elon Musk.

  • His leadership will guide Match Group through privacy, regulatory, and legal concerns across its portfolio.

Sean Edgett, former general counsel of Twitter before it was bought and rebranded as X by Elon Musk in 2022, has been named the new legal chief and secretary of Match Group, the company behind popular dating apps like Tinder and OkCupid. Edgett, who played a central role at Twitter during its acquisition by Musk and subsequent restructuring, is now set to oversee the legal affairs of Match Group's growing portfolio, a Law.com report says.

Edgett’s Role

  • Edgett’s experience handling major issues like content moderation and user privacy will be crucial as Match Group faces its own evolving regulatory landscape.

  • “Match Group’s mission of connecting people globally through innovative technology is inspiring, and I look forward to collaborating with the talented team to navigate the evolving legal landscape and help drive the next chapter of growth,” Edgett said in a LinkedIn post.

  • Match Group CEO Bernard Kim welcomed Edgett to the team, saying, “I am confident that his strategic vision and commitment to excellence will not only strengthen our legal framework but also propel us forward as an industry leader in connecting people around the world.”

Compensation: No details have yet emerged about Edgett’s pay package, but his predecessor Jared Sine, who had been legal chief for seven years when he stepped down in February to become chief legal and strategy officer of GoDaddy, received compensation totaling $7 million—$975,000 in cash and the remainder in stock, back in 2003.

Background at Twitter

  • Edgett joined Twitter in 2012, after serving as legal director at NetApp and attorney at Latham & Watkins and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld.

  • He was the number two legal executive at Twitter, behind Chief Officer Vijaya Gadde. Both he and Gadde were fired in October 2022 after the $44 billion Twitter acquisition by Musk was completed.

  • Edgett, Gadde and other former executives of Twitter filed a lawsuit against the social media company, accusing it of trying to avoid paying them $128 million in severance.

During his decade at Twitter, Edgett led the legal work for dozens of acquisitions and helped plan its 2013 IPO and its sale to Musk.
